In light of this coming Election Day, I’m pausing my usual narrative to share a few hopes—simple phrases that may feel grounding, even in turbulent times:
May we all be safe.
May we find steadiness in mind and body.
May we be free from unnecessary suffering and division.
May we live with ease and well-being, now and into the future.
These phrases may seem naive or unrealistic amid all the uncertainty this election brings. But for me, I no longer want my mind and heart to reflect only the polarization and division that, in so many ways, have been constructed by and for us.
It seems to me that the heart is more expansive than this one-sidedness. I believe there is a sense of wholeness that exists within our contradictions and divisions—in our own hearts, society, and world. That’s what I hope to keep looking for.
I have done my part. I have cast my vote. And now, I must let the chips fall where they may. Even if safety, steadiness, ease, well-being, and wholeness feel out of reach—may it be so.
May it be so—for all of us.
